Henry HUMBLE [Parents] was born about 1765. He died on 29 Oct 1829 in Pollock, Grant Parish, Louisiana. He married Alicia (HUMBLE).

" When Catahoula Parish, Louisiana, was under the rule of Spain, there were few settlers in the area, and no Protestant Churches. After 1803 more Americans settled in Catahoula, but before 1922, they established no permanent Churches. The oldest church in the Ouachita Association, Catahoula Baptist Church, is located about three miles from Enterprise, Louisiana. The church was organized by Henry Humble, who was born in North Carolina about 1765 and moved to Amite County, Mississippi, in 1809. Humble was licensed to preach the word on March 1, 1815. His licensing as a minister of the gospel is registered in Orphan's Court, Volume 1, page 61, Amite County." "In the 1810 census Humble is listed as a resident of Amite County. He was very active as a lawyer. His name frequently appears on civil records of the poor, and as administrator of various wills. He was also an active member of the New Providence Baptist Church. During the period 1812 to 1822 he was often a messenger from this church to meetings of the Mississippi River Baptist Association." "We do not know when Henry Humble came to Catahoula Parish on his first trip. Paxton wrote in his 'History of Baptists in Louisiana that Humble came here in 1822. The minutes of the Mississippi Association show that he signed a 'Declaration of Faith' at Gallilee Baptist Church in Amite County, on August 14, 1824, and he asked for a letter of dismissal from Gallilee Baptist Church on March 19, 1825. Paxton listed the preachers within the Louisiana Association at this time (May 2, 1824). John Impson was in Ouachita, and Henry Humble was in Catahoula." "Humble and another preacher, John Hill, preached the Gospel of peace in the wild and sparsely settled country. Reverend John Impson and Humble organized the Catahoula Baptist Church. The exact date of the organization is unknown. March 1826 marked the union of the church with the Louisiana Association. When Impson and Humble constructed the church, it had seven members: Henry Humble, Alicia Humble (his wife), John Hill Sr., Elizabeth Hawthorne, Jonathan Newman, Anne Newman, and Henry Humble Jr." "According to a local legend, some slaves were among the early members. Shortly after the organizing of the church, a revival meeting was held, and about 20 more souls were added." " Humble led in the founding of the school which met in the church building (Cottingham, 'History of Caldwell Parish')." "In 1828 the association met at Catahoula and Humble was elected moderator. The next year he attended the meeting of the Louisiana Association of Baptist Churches which was held at Zion Hill Church, St. Landry Parish. He served as moderator and preached the opening sermon. He began the long ride home over the poor roads and rough trails through the forest. Traveling on horseback must have tired the old preacher for he became ill October 23, 1829, and died near a settlement now called Pollock. His body was carried back to Enterprise, where he was buried beside his wife. The cemetery has almost been lost. No one has been buried there for over sixty years and no road leads to it. It is on a high ridge in a pine forest south and west of Enterprise. Humble's grave seems to be in about the center of the cemetery. Common, uninscribed stones once identified the graves as such, but many of the stones have been moved by vandals. The only now identifyable graves are those of Henry and Alicia Humble, surrounded by a low stone wall. Today the soil inside the wall is almost level with tho top. A large pin oak grows from the center of the graves." -Irene W. McGuffee
